Before Matt Furie’s Boys Club ever hit the web, Hanselmann had already established a twisted, hilarious, and painfully real world centered on a dysfunctional trio: Megg the witch, Mogg the cat, and Owl the neurotic roommate. They smoked weed, wallowed in existential dread, and clashed in toxic, absurd friendships. It was gritty, brilliant, and totally unique—until Furie came along.
Then suddenly Boys Club appears: another trio of stoner weirdos, one of whom (Pepe) just so happens to catch the internet’s attention. But look closer. The absurdist humor, the pacing, the broken interpersonal dynamics, even the visual rhythm—it’s all eerily familiar. This isn’t inspiration. This is creative identity theft.
